The Forgotten Foundation: Human Values in Behavior and Institutions

0 0

The fast-paced, tech-driven world, makes it easy to overlook the fundamental driving force behind human behavior: values. Whether at an individual level or within organizations, our actions and decisions are rooted in the values we hold dear. Yet, in the rush towards technological advancement, this foundational principle is often forgotten.

Values are not products of algorithms or code; they are cultivated through real-life interactions and experiences with fellow human beings. It’s these organic connections that shape our beliefs, principles, and ultimately, our behavior.

Institutions, particularly universities, are not exempt from this truth. While technology can enhance learning experiences, it cannot replace the essence of genuine knowledge acquisition and dissemination. Universities solely focused on technological immersion and sales-driven mentalities risk losing sight of the core values that underpin true education.

A university is more than just its flashy website, social media presence, or rankings. It’s a community of individuals with diverse expertise, insights, and wisdom gained through authentic interactions and scholarly pursuits. Without the presence of genuine, knowledgeable faculty and staff, universities run the risk of becoming hollow shells, devoid of the depth and richness that defines true academia.

This oversight is particularly evident in certain regions, such as the Global South, where the allure of technology-centric education may overshadow the importance of nurturing organic knowledge and wisdom. As a result, many institutions in these regions may struggle to thrive in the long run, as they neglect the very foundation upon which sustainable academic excellence is built.
